Badge requirements

 

Badgework is an important part of Scouting, and there are numerous activities suitable for all interests. For a link to a full list of badges and their requirements, please visit www.scoutbase.org.uk, but in the meantime here are a few examples:

 

Beaver Scouts

Badges that Beaver Scouts can undertake include Adventure, Animal Friend, Creative, Explore, Faith, Health & Fitness, Hobbies, Safety, Emergency Aid, Information Technology, Musician or Swimmer.

As an example, for the Safety Activity Badge, a Beaver Scout needs to be able to complete the following:
1. Explain the Green Cross code.
2. Explain the water safety code.
3. Say what to do when approached by a stranger.
4. Identify possible dangers around the house and say what to do about them.

Cub Scouts

Badges that Cub Scouts can undertake include Air Activities, Animal Carer, Artist, Astronomer, Athlete,  Book Reader, Camper, Collector, Communicator, Cyclist, Entertainer, Equestrian, Home Help,  Local Knowledge, Map Reader, Martial Arts, My Faith, Physical Recreation, Scientist  or Skater.

As an example, for the Home Help Activity Badge, a Cub Scout must complete the following:
1. Under adult supervision, cook a simple one course meal.
2. Lay a table and serve a simple meal. This can be done with requirement number one.
3. Wash up afterwards and show how to clean a saucepan or similar cooking utensils, cutlery, glassware, etc. This may include loading and unloading a dishwasher.
4. Under adult supervision, wash and iron your Group Scarf.
5. Sew on a badge or button.
6. Keep your room clean and tidy and make your bed for a week.
7. Clean two of the following: windows, silver, brass-work, basin or cupboard.
8. Clean and tidy a living room.

Scouts

Badges for Scouts include Administrator , Aeronautics , Angler , Artist , Arts Enthusiast , Athlete , Aviation Skills , Camper, Canoeist , Caver , Chef , Dinghy Sailor , Electronics , Entertainer , Equestrian , Fire Safety , Hiker , Interpreter , Librarian , Lifesaver , Martial Arts , Mechanic , Model Maker , My  Faith , Nautical Skills , Navigator, Orienteer , Photographer , Public Relations , Survival Skills , Water  Sports , World Faiths or Writer.

To achieve the Camper Badge, a Scout needs to:
1. Camp under canvas as a Scout for at least 15 nights.
2. Lead a group of Scouts in the pitching, striking and packing of a four to six person tent.
3. Know what to look for when choosing a campsite and in deciding the best position to pitch tents.
4. Show an understanding of the reasons for hygiene and the importance of being safe and tidy in camp.
5. Demonstrate how to store food hygienically at camp.
6. Construct two useful camp gadgets such as a camp larder, altar fire, flagpole, camp gate etc.
7. Prepare and cook either a full hot breakfast or a main meal for 2 to 6 people.

Explorer Scouts

Badges for Explorers include Air Activities , Athlete , Advanced Aviation Skills , Canoeing , Caving , Climbing , Community , Creative Arts , Hill Walking , Lifesaver , Motor Sports , Mountain Biking , Advanced Nautical Skills , Performing Arts , Public relations , Racquet Sports , Science and Technology , Skiing or Water Activities. For example, to get the Mountain Biking badge, an Explorer Scout must complete the requirements listed in one of these alternatives:

Alternative A - Competition and Exhibition
1. Participate regularly in a Mountain Biking discipline such Downhill, Dirtjump, Four Cross (4X) or any other mountain bike sport as agreed by the Leadership Team. A total of at least 25 hours commitment is required. Evidence of improvement should be produced in suitable form.
2. Discuss the skills and techniques used in the chosen activity with a group of young people.
3. Discuss the safety rules of the chosen activity. Explain to an appropriate adult how to use the skills learned in a responsible manner.
4. Take part in at least two competitions or demonstrations and discuss your performance and how to improve with the examiner or instructor.

Alternative B - Expedition
1. Show an understanding of the Mountain Bike Code of Conduct.
2. Demonstrate an ability to control the bike over different types of terrain.
3. Know what to do in the case of an accident. Have a basic knowledge of First Aid, including the treatment of hypothermia.
4. Be able to read a map well and to orientate it using identified features or by using a compass.
5. Give reasonable estimates of times of transit over distances in different terrains.
6. Plan and carry out a two-day ride with not less than 4 hours riding each day. (Explorer Scouts will need an Event Passport or be accompanied by a Leader with a Nights Away Permit).
7. Be able to undertake emergency repairs in the field.
